Disc Man

Plastic Discs, wooden beads, metal rods, clay, mesh fabric

Many moments of EPCOT’s long history stand out to me, including the Millennium Celebration. Included in the event to kick off the 21st century was the Tapestry of Nations parade, filled with puppets created by the magnificent Michael Curry. One of the most memorable puppets was the Disc Man, and I found it only fitting to try and create a miniature version of this fan favorite as a desk piece.

I was lucky enough to find a very similar thin mesh material for the body, along with cutting small circles from plastic for the disks. The hands were sculpted, and the joints were painted wooden beads.

Most of the challenge was getting the tension just right so that the figure was tight, but not too tight that I couldn’t slip the fabric over the discs. But after some trial and error, the Disc Man was born.
