Postmodern Landscape Shirt, inspired by the paintings of Michael Graves

Reclaimed garments, cotton

Much of my work derives from my admiration for the artists and designers who came before me, and this garment is no exception. In wanting to encapsulate the magic of Michael Graves’ stacked-perspective paintings, I created an appliqué dress shirt reminiscent of his iconic landscapes.

While Graves’ drew inspiration from Italian farms and ruins, to me his work felt reminiscent of my childhood home and midwest upbringing. As I navigate moving further from my earliest years and memories, Graves’ design language serves as a direct and curated reminder of my past that bridges my memories with developed visuals, whether it be through his architecture, products, or paintings.

Adopting Graves’ style in a textile format was a delightful challenge, and I am quite proud of the resulting sentimental piece.
