Fields and Fields

Fabric remnants, yarn, paint
-
I grew up in the Midwest, and almost everywhere you went there was fields. Rows and rows of corn, lettuce, hay, and more made up the flat expanses around me, along with the occasional wind turbines if I was going to Grandma’s. I’ll never forget my first time going up in a plane, getting to look down over the quilt of fields below I had only ever seen from surface level.

When my design professor assigned a project that worked with “breaking the grid” and paper weaving, I was reminded of the quilts and fields that made up my childhood. So, I went to work scouring for any and all fabric remnants to patchwork together.

I had a fun time coming up with different designs for each plot of land. An orchard here, weaving there, etc. until it was time to combine all the elements.

I spent a long day alone in the studio pinning pieces together, seeing where what fit best. Once I ended up with a composition I liked, I framed it with the addition of a blue sky. The final touches came with lace clouds and loosely stitched yarn for a fading tree line.

I believe my folk-esque piece could be interpreted a lot of ways. This was definitely one of my more experimental pieces and I had a fun time with the process.
