Carpet
72"x 54"
Tufted blue, green, and cream wool yarn, canvas
The Carpet is influenced by the use of wall-to-wall carpet flooring as a space for crafting, reading, or simply thinking as a child. In looking to recreate the comfort and simplicity of the environment, this wool carpet encourages the user to come down to its level and stay awhile. The varying pile heights create a complexity that is reflective of hedges, lawns, rivers and walkways. Within the design are echoes of urban planning and architecture, allowing the imagination to revert to past playtimes.
The Carpet was originally ideated as a quilt, taking visual queues from the patterns and colors of the quilts and backsplash of the childhood home. A more rigid structure was favored, landing on the concept of a carpet.
Progression of the Carpet design concept, starting with a more tile-like approach.
Final Carpet to-scale digital design
Design is transferred onto the tufting cloth
The tufting is done from the back of the cloth, where the sections have been marked by color.
Completed tufting on the frame
The Carpet is sealed from the back before being removed from the frame.
Trimming is done on the green and cream sections to create the different pile heights, with the cream areas being the shortest.
