A Sunday Afternoon in the Dye Lab

Reactive dye, screen printing ink, raw silk on stretched canvas

24” x 36”

Inspired by Georges Seurat’s “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte”, my take on this work combines the iconic imagery of the painting with mid century design language, which was created alongside a set of ten complementary samples.

The background was painted on a screen in reverse with reactive dyes, which was then screen printed using a thickening paste to transfer the image onto silk.

The figures were created by use of stencils attached to a screen before printing with screen printing ink, resulting in bold, opaque shapes.

In reinterpreting this piece, I wanted to acknowledge the iconic composition that has made such an impact on pop culture over the pointillist technique the piece is known for. There is a timeless charm to the work because of its careful composure, and I believe by breaking down the imagery to its most basic elements, and having it remain recognizable, proves just how iconic this work remains.
