A Sunday Afternoon in the Dye Lab (Samples)
Paint pen, reactive dye, screen printing ink, raw silk
8” x 8” samples
Inspired by Georges Seurat’s “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte”, my take on this work combines the iconic imagery of the painting with mid century design language. This collection of samples was created alongside a larger composition.
For the samples, I drew inspiration from the illustrations of Ludwig Bemelmans. Known for the Madeline books, Bemelman’s style was helpful when developing the dyed backgrounds and drawn line work.
